Many people suffer throughout their lives from random belly aches and often put it down to things like food poisoning or “must have been something I ate”, when in fact they could be intolerant to tomatoes. Having suffered with tomato intolerance all my life, I know exactly how bad tomato intolerance can be, and just how bad the medical profession can be at diagnosing it. Growing up as a child with this problem and not knowing the cause sometimes made my life miserable. Ruined holidays, days out, school trips, even my education suffered due to the amount of time I had to take off due to the mystery pains and diarrhoea. My doctor once said to me that I was suffering from “Growing Pains”… Really!?? I decided to keep a food diary at the age of 13 which helped identify the cause and it was tomatoes, and anything containing tomatoes (such as lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, tomato ketchup etc.). So, I want to help raise awareness of this condition so that other people don’t have to suffer the way I did.
Tomato intolerance is a type of food intolerance specific to Tomatoes. It is usually because the body doesn’t produce enough of a particular enzyme needed for digestion of the salicylates (or solanine) present in tomatoes. Even though eating tomatoes will not cause an immediate life-threatening allergic reaction in people who suffer with tomato intolerance, the lack of a specific enzyme in the body may also lead to the build up of toxins and histamine which can mimic the symptoms of a tomato allergy.
So what are the symptoms?
Tomato intolerance is rarely harmful but can cause very unpleasant symptoms to the sufferer which can begin soon after, or several days after eating tomatoes. Symptoms can include: nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, intestinal contractions, diarrhoea, flushing of the skin, papitations, headache, urticaria (hives), and in extreme cases where there is a build up of histamine resulting in a pseudo allergic reaction, even difficulty breathing (in which case, you should seek immediate medical attention). If you often suffer with any of these symptoms, I would like to suggest you keep a strict food diary to help identify the trigger food if a food intolerance is the cause.
How can it be diagnosed?
The only really accurate way to test for tomato intolerance is to remove tomatoes from your diet (including any products that may contain tomatoes as an ingredient – which can be quite tricky to do), see if the symptoms improve and then reintroduce tomatoes. If the symptoms return, an intolerance is very likely.
